Am Donnerstagabend findet das erste Fernseh-Rededuell zwischen Bush und Kerry statt, um 21 Uhr Ostküstenzeit, also 3 Uhr in der Nacht hierzulande. Diese Debatten der US-Präsidentschaftskandidaten haben strenge Regeln: Einige sind auf der Webseite der Commission on Presidential Debates zu finden, die Feinheiten in einem 7,5 MB großen Dokument:

Notwithstanding subparagraph 5c, the candidates may take notes during the debate on the size, color, and type of paper each prefers and using the type of pen or pencil that each prefers. Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff of the Commission will place such paper, pens, and pencils on the podium, table, or other structure to be used by the candidate in that debate.

Die Kommission hat umfangreiche Informationen über frühere Debatten gesammelt, unter anderem zu dem berühmten Duell zwischen einem charismatischen John F. Kennedy und einem unrasierten Richard Nixon 1960. Diese Filmrolle brachte übrigens Robert Redford 1976 mit, um Jimmy Carter für seine Debatte zu trainieren.
